When you first install WordPress for a customer there are always a few things you instinctivly do because you know there is a real benefit from doing it. I use a number of plug ins and widgets and layout tricks and tips, but what do I set first?
I must say the first thing I do is to set the permalinks to use a custom permalink setting so that the Urls within the wordpress section of my site are as SEO and person friendly as they can be in my view. I therefore change the permalinks strucutre so that the url as you will see is main address / Category Name / Post Title. Therefore as you see on this post the category is wordpress and the post section of the url completes it making the full Url http://www.gtwebdesign.co.uk/news-blog/index.php/wordpress/first-thing-i-set-in-wordpress/
If you are new to wordpress and do not know how to set this, then you can log into wordpress and int he left menu select “Settings” and then select Permalink. Once in there select the option of “Custom” url and enter “/index.php/%category%/%postname%/” in the space and then the new design will continue for new posts.
WHY IS THIS FIRST?? – The reason this is the first thing that I set in most is that i want every post from day 1 to have the correct URL structure
WordPress offers both the technical and non technical web user a host of tools and functions to enhance or create their website. At Gt Web Design we believe in using WordPress as a great tool to help customer to control their website and as a great tool to help with their SEO stratergy
